  • Charles Has anyone viewed the video link about Plane Spotters?  At our local airport people take pictures and movies all the time and I have never seen an officer pull a gun and put people on the ground.  And I think even I know the difference between a shoulder mounted missile and a camera.  Curious where these events took place.

in the topic Who has the right of way? in the forum Part 91 - General Operations and Flight Rules
OK, I'm a little confused and................I may have forgotten............but I have been thinking about this question. If coming to a non-towered airport. lets say straight in you make your call for traffic. There is someone in the pattern doing touch and goes. What happens in this situation? I have right of way because I'm on final....He has right of way because he is lower than me....Do I ask him to extend his downwind? I don't remember. I was given this Reg: Under the heading of RIGHT OF WAY RULES, FAR91.113 (g) states, “Aircraft, while on final approach to land or while landing, have the right-of-way over other aircraft in flight or operating on the surface, except that they shall not take advantage of this rule to force an aircraft off the runway which has already landed and is attempting to make way for an aircraft on final approach. When two or more aircraft are approaching an airport for the purpose of landing, the aircraft at the lower altitude has the right-of-way, but it shall not take advantage of this rule to cut in front of another which is on final approach to land or to overtake that aircraft.” From what I gather by this the aircraft on final has the right of way over another except if lets say another craft is turning base at a lower altitude, but if both craft are at the same altitude the one on final has the right of way. But the lower aircraft wanting to turn base may not empiede the aircraft on final eventhough it may be at a lower altitude. Am I right about this? Seems a little confusing! Also what is the defination of on final? How many miles out is being on final? Are you on final as soon as you announce your intentions no matter you miles out? Thanks

Thanks for the feedback Phil. That's exactly what my mechanic said. Get the Parts Catalog & Maintenance Manual. The shop is so cool....I get to use all the tools and I get all the hands on training in the maintenance for free as long as I buy my parts from him. I think that's great. Am I crazy....I'm either working on or flying my airplane everyday?

I guess buying an airplane is like finding a wife. You'll never find the perfect one. I saw some nice ones listed in other states, but what a pain it would be going to another state, staying at a motel, renting a car, making arrangements for the pre-buy, making the transaction, and flying it home, after making any repairs needed for the trip. My friend and I flew all over California looking at aircraft. I finally found one I liked 150 miles away. NOT perfect but nice enough. It's only 40 years old. If I didn't lower my standards (I wanted a 40,000 airplane for 20,000) I would still be looking instead of FLYING EVERYDAY. I ended up buying a 20,000 airplane for 20,000. Good Luck in your search.
